Whip is the grandson of Captain Hoxworth and Noelani. His maternal grandfather is John Whipple and his father is Bromley Hoxworth. His grandfather becomes close to him just before his death. His father wants him to attend Yale, but he wants to go to sea. His grandfather puts him on a ship to the Suez without telling anyone and he is gone for seven years.
