Chapter 15 Summary
Time is marked by events in Brian's mental journal. The day of "first meat" was the day Brian decided to kill a "foolbird." He'd grown tired of being scared by them. Even though he comes upon large flocks of the birds, he can't seem to catch one. He decides that he's looking at them incorrectly. Frustration starts to settle in, as he's leaning against a tree, thinking. When he stands up and scares another bird, a bird that had been sitting in front of him the entire time, Brian understands that he needs to see with better eyes.
He finds the key to spotting them after watching a "foolbird" fly. Its shape, like a pointy fat flying pear, is the distinguishing feature. He trains his eyes to look only for the shape and, after many tries and failures, finally succeeds. He catches one, kills it, and returns to camp with...
