Chapter 12 Summary
Brian makes a fish spear by whittling wood with his hatchet and then slicing the end in half to create two prongs. This activity captivates his attention for hours as he whittles the end down to form the perfect tip.
His first attempt to catch fish fails. Standing in the water, he waits for the fish to come to him. Just when he thinks the time is right, he jabs the spear into the water and comes up with nothing! Brian tries throwing the spear, but each time he moves, the fish get "spooked" and leave.
He needs to "invent" a bow and wonders if that's how primitive man did it thousands of years ago. He searches near his berry patch for the right wood that has plenty of spring.
Brian goes down toward the water, all the while keeping a lookout for the bear or anything else that could...
