Chapter 10 Summary
After discovering the ability to make fire, the challenge for Brian is to keep the fire going. The first order of business every day is to gather enough wood to maintain a hearty fire. The smoke from the fire is also useful as it drives away the swarm of biting insects.
Much to Brian's delight, the morning after creating fire, he finds 17 turtle eggs in the sand outside his shelter. While the thought of eating raw eggs makes him shiver, his hunger takes over. The turtle eggshells are very leathery and tough. Eating the eggs re-awakens his deep hunger, and he wants to finish them but stops and thinks a moment. If he does that, he'll be without eggs and eggs are food - even if they are raw. Brian stops after eating the first 11 eggs, and vows that he will save them and eat only one per...
