Chapter 9 Summary

After breakfast on the first day of the new school term, Professor McGonagall gave all the Gryffindors their new schedules: Their first class was Defense Against the Dark Arts: Professor Snape began by noting that "defense" against the "Dark Arts" was an ever-evolving field, because the Dark Arts were constantly changing. Snape had the students pair off: one would try to mentally (nonverbally) jinx his or her partner, who would try to repel the jinx. Professor Snape paired with Harry, who did repel him, but received detention nevertheless. Their second class was Potions: Professor Slughorn had them attempt to make the Draught of Living Death, noting that whoever did best would win enough Felix Felicis to last 12 hours. Harry won, following the instructions in the copy of the Advanced Potion Making textbook.....
