In Chapter 23, Raleigh meets Toutant, a saxophone player who lives on a piece of property crowded with abandoned vehicles that contain livestock. He claims the livestock is for his own use, but the truth is that he butchers and sells the meat to make a living. Raleigh learns that Jubal makes his living driving a mule-drawn carriage for tourists and occasionally plays his clarinet in local clubs. Raleigh finds Jubal in his carriage and tries to convince him to go to New Orleans...
