Summary

In Chapter 2, Gwendy decides the best place to hide the button box where even her parents will not find it is in an open space in the roots of an old tree. Her parents do not notice anything different about her because they are wrapped up in their jobs and have also had a few drinks before dinner. Gwendy’s father does ask if she is sick when she turns down a piece of chocolate cake for dessert.

The next day Gwendy completes her daily run up the stairs and then returns home for a piece of chocolate from the box. It fulfills her hunger once again. She spends the afternoon with her friend Olive. Back at home that evening, Gwendy tries the money lever but is not terribly disappointed when she does not get another silver coin.
