Part V, Chapters Fifty through Fifty-Four Summary

In chapter fifty, Mark calls Wes and apologizes for their earlier encounter. Wes hangs up and Mark calls right back, saying that he needs to talk to Wes. When Wes says that Mark's only option is to talk over the phone, Mark responds that he needs Wes's legal services. He says that he wants to turn himself in, that he can no longer live with the guilt of his crimes, and that he wants Wes to negotiate the arrangement with the police. Wes and Sam go to the Little Shamrock where they talk about the situation. Sam urges Wes to simply refuse to see Mark but Wes says that Mark has come to realize that what he did was wrong.
