Part I, Chapters One through Six Summary

Best friends Mark Dooher and Wes Farrell are having lunch together and discussing their lives. Wes and his wife, Lydia, are divorcing and Mark says that he could never divorce Sheila because of his role as attorney for the Catholic Archdiocese. After lunch, Mark sees a junior partner of the firm, Joe Avery, with a very attractive girl. Joe is later surprised to see Mark arrive in his office and issue an invitation to a party.
