Enchanted, a Black teenage girl who dreams of becoming a famous singer, swims and spends time with her friends at school. She convinces her mother to let her go to an audition in New York. She sings beautifully but is not selected. One of the judges, superstar Korey Fields, singles her out and offers her private singing lessons. Enchanted is excited to get to know Korey better and learn from him. Korey invites Enchanted and her family to his next concert where he passes her his cell phone number as well. The pair begin a text relationship despite Korey being over a decade older than Enchanted.

Enchanted is active in a Will and Willow Black teen group. At one of their parties, she is sexually assaulted by a boy she believed to be one of her friends. Korey sends his bodyguards to pick her up and he promises to protect her. As Korey and Enchanted grow closer, Enchanted begins to worry that their relationship is inappropriate but she is so flattered by the attention Korey gives her that she agrees to continue keeping everything a secret from her friends and family.

Enchanted begins to attend private lessons with Korey in his studio where he pushes her to begin a romantic relationship beyond their text messages. He begins ordering her to dress more sexily for him, but Enchanted convinces herself that he likes her. Eventually, Korey asks Enchanted's parents if he can bring her on tour with him. He offers them thousands of dollars in payment which they need to keep their children attending private school. Enchanted goes on tour with Korey.

Korey's assistant, Jessica, promises Enchanted's parents that she will look after their daughter, but she allows Korey to behave however he wants. Korey begins demanding more from Enchanted, including that she wear a wig and begin drinking and using drugs with him. She wants to keep Korey happy, so Enchanted does whatever Korey tells her to do. Korey begins to demand sex from Enchanted and he physically abuses her when she refuses. Korey schemes to keep Enchanted's family from having any contact with her, isolating her further.

It takes months for Enchanted to gather the strength to consider leaving Korey. When they fly back from his home in Atlanta to New York, the flight attendant asks Enchanted if she needs help. Enchanted has grown brave enough, and she begs for help.

Once Enchanted returns home to her family, Korey begins to try and get her back. He releases intimate videos and pleads with her. Enchanted is unsure of what she should do, but she knows that Korey was abusing her even though he told her he loved her. Enchanted goes back to Korey for one final night after which he promises to leave her alone.

Korey is murdered after Enchanted visits him for a final time and she is highlighted as the main suspect after she makes allegations of sexual abuse. Enchanted must fight to clear her name and discovers that the murder was carried out by the famous music producer, Richie Price, to protect his investments. Enchanted begins the difficult road of healing after trauma once the novel ends.
