Chapter 10 Summary

Grendel is bored. The Shaper is sick. Grendel watches a great horned goat climb toward his mere. He attacks the goat, only to see it keep climbing. This hard-headedness angers Grendel, who throws rocks at the goat until he knocks off its head. The goat continues climbing until it dies. Grendel goes down to watch men at their work. An old woman is telling tales to children of a giant from across the sees with the strength of 30 men. The sun is staying longer in the sky now. The children play late into the twilight, and Grendel kills those that stay out too late.

The king and queen come to visit the Shaper on his deathbed. The Shaper begins to prophesy about the Danes, but his last breath is cut off. He dies.....
