Chapter 5 Summary

Grendel encounters the reddish-gold dragon spread out on top of his pile of treasure. He sees the dragon's fiery breath and sharp tusks and is afraid. The dragon is expecting Grendel and tells Grendel to step to the side to avoid his fiery cough. Grendel does, getting a pat on the head in return. The dragon, malicious and ancient, has a raspy, old man's voice. He laughs hysterically at Grendel who, like a rabbit, huddles in fear. Grendel picks up an emerald to throw at the dragon, and the dragon reacts with anger. Grendel drops the rock.

Grendel thinks about a comparison the dragon makes, that Grendel feels now how men feel when they see Grendel. Grendel begins to reconsider his attacks on men, only to have the dragon read his mind and respond,.....
