Chapter 2 Summary

Grendel tells the story of how he first encountered men, along with other key points in his development from child to adult. He begins by declaring that he speaks words that no one understands any more and that he used to play violent, imaginary games when he was young. He explores the cave in his monstrous way, pushing further into the dark, until he comes to the pool of firesnakes and discovers his way out of the cave into the mere. He explores further in the night air, discovering eyes in the cave that seem to belong to other monstrous creatures that look right through him. Grendel's mother's eyes are different. She looks at him. But in his mother's eyes he sees a crushing love and a separateness that he does not want.....
