Summary

The next chapter is titled “Fading Away.” Hideki keeps running until he is certain that Maeda is not chasing him. He throws away the Maeda's rifle but holds onto his grenade. He runs until he can run no farther. Knowing he will die without food, he decides to eat what is in Ray's pack. He eats the crackers, then breaks open a tin of the delicious beef.
