Chapter 49 Summary

Pip now walks to Mrs. Havisham with an edge of loneliness. His world is rapidly collapsing. When he gets there, she asks him how much is needed to settle with Herbert. He says "900 pounds." She gives it to him, but Miss Havisham, for the first time, is truly broken with remorse. Pip forgives her. She weeps. She speaks of how she stole Estella's heart away and put ice in its place, a fact she understands now because of Estella's coldness to her.
