Chapter 40 Summary

Pip is now concerned for the safety of his visitor. Magwitch, the convict, has decided to disguise himself. After going through various disguises, they finally hit on the idea of dressing him as a prosperous farmer. Jaggers assures him if he is caught he will be hanged for he has been permanently expatriated from England. Herbert now comes in and meets the convict. He must swear on Magwitch's Bible that he will not tell anyone.

Chapter 40 Analysis

For the rest of the book, Pip's paramount concern will be for his benefactor's safety even though he has secretly renounced his good fortune. He takes Herbert in on his terrible secret. Herbert will be his trustworthy accomplice in trying to help Magwitch.
