Pip and Herbert are surprised at their renewed acquaintance. It seems that Herbert was being "tested" for his suitability for visiting Havisham and as a target fiancée for Estella, both of which failed. Herbert decides to call him "Handel," not Philip, as Pip proposes, a reference to Handel's piece, "The Harmonious Blacksmith." Herbert coaches Pip about his table manners. Herbert tells Pip how Miss Havisham's mother had died when she was young and how she was spoiled by her father. A half-brother was extravagant and willful so Miss Havisham was favored in her father's will. At some point, a suitor appeared on the scene, which used her and obtained a share of her brewery from her brother. Herbert's father, Matthew, warned her and for that reason was officially excluded from Miss Havisham's company......
