In the fourth year of Pip's apprenticeship, Pip goes with Joe to the Three Jolly Bargeman where they hear a newspaper account of a murder colorfully related by Mr. Wopsle. A stranger interjects, forcing Wopsle to affirm that, in English law, a man is innocent until he is proven guilty. The stranger, indeed, makes Mr. Wopsle look quite bad in front of his friends. He then introduces himself as Jaggers, an attorney appointed by an unknown benefactor who is going to provide for Pip and help him become a gentleman.
