In the fourth year of Pip's apprenticeship, Pip goes with Joe to the Three Jolly Bargeman where they hear a newspaper account of a murder colorfully related by Mr. Wopsle. A stranger interjects, forcing Wopsle to affirm that, in English law, a man is innocent until he is proven guilty. The stranger, indeed, makes Mr. Wopsle look quite bad in front of his friends.
