Key Questions

Due to its strong depiction of family interaction, this lengthy novel will provoke ready discussion by readers who may recognize themselves in some of the roles. Bull's abusive personality cannot fail to arouse reader revulsion, and the dichotomy of Ben's love/hate relationship with his father provides ample material for discussion. The passing of judgement upon Lillian and Bull is impossible to avoid, and discussion groups might enjoy suggesting alternate actions to those chosen by the characters. The well-emphasized relationship between Mary Anne and Ben also offers readers a chance to analyze this sibling symbiosis through comparison/contrast of the two characters.
