Chapter 29 Summary
The boys have chosen the water tower on St. Catherine's Island as the blackmail drop spot. They drive by three times to ensure the coast is clear before they park the car and begin the long climb up the ladder to the catwalk. Sammy remarks that Junior Palmer must have had a cow when he received the blackmail note, which he'd left under his windshield wiper. Sammy fully expects to find fifty dollars waiting for them at the top of the tower. Ben asks about Sammy's date with Emma Lee, which went well. Sammy hasn't kissed her yet. He informs Ben that she's not the kind of girl on whom he can use his Bohemian Mountain Approach. Suddenly, Red Pettus surprises them by holding a shotgun to Sammy's throat. Ben looks down and sees the revolving red light of Junior's squad car below them.
