Chapter 9 Summary

The following Monday, Bull leaves his house by the back door at dawn only to find a large, muscular black woman sitting on his back steps. Bull, unsure how to address a Southern black person, resorts to his standard line, "'Stand by for a fighter pilot.'" (pg. 95) He introduces himself as the Great Santini and beats a fist against his chest. Bull is aware that he's making an idiot of himself, but he doesn't know what else to say. He compliments the woman on her muscular physique, and she tells him she can punch as hard as a man. She offers to let him punch her shoulder and tells him she has made money in the past by trading punches with men. Bull refuses, but the woman insists. Reluctantly, Bull punches her.....
