As the Beechams drive along downtown Ravenel, Matt's situation is unbearable. His mother tells him to cross his legs and offer his suffering up to God. Mary Anne is dismayed when she sees the dilapidated high school, but Bull reassures her that it's only the colored high school. Meanwhile, Lillian is enraptured by the lovely antebellum homes lining the streets. A beautiful river runs along and through the town, close to the houses.
