Chapter 3 Summary

A month later, Bull wakes up at two in the morning, excited about that day's trip to Ravenel, South Carolina. He dresses in his fatigues and says a rosary while he does his morning exercises. Lillian tries to get another fifteen minutes of sleep, but Bull reminds her that the movers are meeting them in Ravenel at nine a.m. Bull wakes his daughters by flicking their light switch off and on, the same tactic used to get Marine recruits out of bed. His methods are harsher in his sons' room. He pulls both boys out of bed and pins them to the ground, ridiculing them for their lack of preparation for his surprise attack.

In the kitchen, Lillian's mother, Alice Sole, joins him for some snappy repartee. The family is unhappy to be leaving.....
