Chapter 15 "Homecoming" Summary

Dressed in a new blouse and a new haircut, Gilly waits with Nonnie at the airport. Courtney's plane is late, and Gilly's stomach is doing somersaults. Finally, passengers begin emptying into the terminal. Gilly is crushed, when she doesn't recognize anyone resembling her mother's photo. Suddenly, a plump, stringy-haired Courtney greets Nonnie. Courtney casually reveals that she only plans to stay for two days, and that Nonnie had sent her the money for a ticket. Gilly is crushed, as her mother has only come, because her grandmother paid her to. Gilly excuses herself to the bathroom, believing she will vomit. Afterwards, she runs to a payphone and, shaking, dials Trotter's number.

Trotter reassures her that life is not guaranteed to turn out any particular way, and that happy endings do not exist. Trotter.....
