Chapter 11 "Never and Other Canceled Promises" Summary

Finally, sitting down to a turkey dinner, Trotter asks Gilly, who was the woman who had visited the house a few days earlier. Gilly lies, saying it was a solicitor, who had been scared off by the sight of Gilly's three sickly patients, and Trotter's tumble onto Gilly. The four of them laugh, and forget about the gray-haired lady.

Walking home from school the next day, Agnes complains that Gilly has been ignoring her. Gilly explains that she's been busy taking care of her family. Agnes sneers at Gilly calling Trotter, W.E. and Mr. Randolph her 'family,' but backs off, when Gilly defends them.
