After the running away fiasco, Miss Ellis argues with Trotter that it is in Gilly's best interest that she be placed in another home. Trotter flatly refuses, saying how much she cares about Gilly. Miss Ellis reminds her that she is not Gilly's real mother, only a foster mother. Gilly overhears this argument, but slams the door and pretends to enter the house after the arguing has subsided.
Miss Ellis puts on her fake smile, but before she can speak, Trotter tells Gilly that it's up to her to decide whom she wants to live with. When Gilly replies that it's her real mother, Miss Ellis sharply asks Gilly to consider that her mother has never come for her, because she does not want to take care of her daughter.
