In this chapter, Gilly describes how she hates being dragged to church every Sunday morning. She rides in a taxi with Trotter and W.E. and Mr. Randolph. The taxi drops Mr. Randolph off at his own church before delivering the others to theirs.
That afternoon, Gilly goes upstairs to find a tie to lend to Mr. Randolph, for his son's visit that afternoon. She sees Trotter's purse lying open on the bed, and quickly plucks out a handful of bills. She returns to the kitchen with the gaudiest tie she is able to find, which everyone finds extremely funny.
