Gilly suddenly feels the urgent need to leave Thompson Park, because she isn't able to control things as she is used to. In her hurry to leave, she enlists the help of both Agnes and William Ernest to steal the rest of the money from Mr. Randolph's house. She cajoles W.E. into coming into Mr. Randolph's house by explaining that it involves a surprise for Trotter.
Gilly finds a roll of bills and stuffs it into her pocket just as Trotter and Mr. Randolph arrive back at the house. Later, she counts out thirty-four dollars. She puts aside five to give to Agnes, and adds the rest to the money she took the last time. It's not nearly enough to get to California.
Gilly comes up with an excuse to get back.....
