Gilly's new room is tiny. She unpacks her few belongings, though she considers it a waste of time. She puts away the few clothes she has, as well as her one prized possession. It's an old photograph of her young mother, Courtney Rutherford Hopkins. Just thinking about her mother nearly makes her cry. She shoves the picture out of sight, and fights back the tears.
Once downstairs, Gilly refuses to help Maime Trotter with dinner. She makes a rude comment about the TV show that W.E. is watching, which Trotter takes to mean that Gilly thinks W.E. is mentally retarded. Trotter scolds Gilly for the hurtful comment.
