The Wilsons and Joads are traveling together as they cross the Oklahoma border into Texas. Granma's health declines from the unrelenting heat, but the family must push on and care for her the best they can. Rose of Sharon shares her hopes and dreams for her new life, and tells Ma that Connie intends to study to become a repairman and have his own appliance store one day. Rose of Sharon is pleased that her unborn child will have all the things that she did not have when growing up.
