Scene 10 Summary

All of the characters are assembled in a courtroom, and the three gods appear, robed as judges. The first god reads the charge, that Shui Ta has done away with Shen Te in order to get control of her business. Shui Ta pleads not guilty.

The Policeman testifies to the personal integrity of Shui Ta, Shu Fu testifies that Shui Ta is a good businessman, and Mrs. Mi Tzu testifies that Shui Ta is a good member of the community. The poor people (including the Husband and Wife whose tobacco Shui Ta used to start his factory) testify that he's a thief, a blackmailer, and a murderer.

Shui Ta begins to defend himself, but soon Wong, Yang Sun, members of the Family, the Unemployed Man, and even Mrs. Mi Tzu shout out accusations. Shui Ta says that he had tried to create a good life for Shen...
