Scene 9 Summary

Mrs. Shin, dressed in nice new clothes, watches as Shui Ta, who now seems quite fat, tells the Old Woman and Old Man that "he" doesn't know when Shen Te will be back. The Old Woman and Old Man leave, saying they just want to thank her for sending them the two hundred silver dollars.

Mrs. Shin tells Shui Ta that the money arrived too late and that the Old Man and Woman had lost their carpet shop. Shui Ta complains of being dizzy, and Mrs. Shin tells him he's in his six month, saying that she'll always be there for her/him. Shen Te asks whether she can count on that, and Mrs. Shin comments that Shui Ta can afford anything. When Shen Te protests that it's all for the child and worries about rumors starting, Mrs. Shin takes her in her arms and comforts her...
