Scene 8 Summary

In this brief scene, we see Shui Ta's busy tobacco factory, where all of the poor people we've seen earlier now work. Mrs. Yang narrates a series of quick scenes, telling how Shui Ta brought two lawsuits against Yang Sun on behalf of Shen Te, one for breach of promise of marriage and another for obtaining two hundred silver dollars dishonestly; how Shui Ta promised to drop the suits if Yang Sun would agree to come and work in the factory; and how, through embracing honesty, Yang Sun became foreman. The Unemployed Man sings about the rewards of hard work. Yang Sun joins in, clapping faster so the workers will work faster. Shui Ta strolls by, smoking a cigar.
