In a city park, a young man named Yang Sun watches a plane cross the sky; he then takes out a rope and looks for a strong tree from which he can hang himself. Two prostitutes invite him to join them, but he refuses. Shen Te appears, and the prostitutes confront her about stealing their potential clients. She tells them that she's on her way to a tea house to meet her future husband. Yang Sun shouts at the prostitutes and moves them along.
