The Husband, Wife and Family are making breakfast when a man introducing himself as Shui Ta arrives, accompanied by the Carpenter. Shui Ta tells the family to get up and get dressed since customers will be coming soon, and he isn't running a charity shop. The Husband sends out members of the family to find Shen Te, who he says wouldn't treat them this way, and he also sends a Boy out to steal some food from the nearby bakery.

Shui Ta negotiates with the Carpenter, who initially insists upon payment of a hundred silver pieces but grudgingly accepts twenty after Shui Ta threatens to return the shelves the Carpenter had built specially for the shop.
