Scene 1 Summary

Shen Te tells us that the gods gave her a thousand silver dollars, most of which she used to take out a lease on a tobacco shop. She also tells us that she hopes to do a lot of good there, starting with the shop's former owner, Mrs. Shin, who makes Shen Te feel guilty about turning her out of her home. Shen Te gives her some rice to feed her family.

In quick succession, a string of people arrives, and they all want help or money. There is a Husband and Wife who sheltered Shen Te when she first came to the city; an Unemployed Man; a Carpenter asking for payment for shelves that Mrs. Shin ordered but Shen Te has to pay for; the Family of the Husband and Wife (a Brother, Sister-in-Law, Grandfather, Niece and Nephew); and the landlady, Mrs. Mi Tzu, who comes...
