Chapter 20, "Spooky Cott" Summary
After all the talk of visiting the haunted house Spooky Cott, the children decide to visit it before school starts. They have made a map, which they take with them on the expedition. They sneak up on the place, but needlessly, since there is no one to see them coming. They hoot to each other to signal their various approach, but that scares them even more than they would have been. Finally they get close to the house, and the door is open with music coming out of it. There are even potted geraniums on the porch. Suddenly, a voice calls out to invite them in.
To everyone's surprise, a young man is living inside. He comments that it is too dark to paint, which sparks Will's interest. He inquires if the man is a painter, an artist. He is, although he went into the military and then came home....
