Chapter 14, "New Beginnings" Summary

Monday morning at school, several students were missing because of a heavy snowfall. George arrived late and sad and pale, because his brother was reported missing, presumed dead, in the war. Willie has advanced from the beginner class to his proper age. The students vocally practice the times tables. Willie notices that the teacher, Mrs. Hartridge, is very beautiful. He focuses on the color of her clothes, and her face and hair. Patsy, a girl, who has a bit of a crush on Willie, asks Mrs. Hartridge for some quiet time to talk. Everyone wonders what it's about, but her brother knows. She wants to apply for the exam to go to high school, which girls never did at this time in history.

Everyone seems shocked, but Willie stands up for her......
