Chapter 9, "Birthday" Summary

Willie wakes up early the next morning to practice writing before school, but it is a special day, his birthday. After the ritual of washing the sheets and pajamas, he writes his name many times before Mr. Tom invites him to join exercising Sam the dog. Soon, the postman arrives and gives Tom some cards, parcels, and a basket with a lovely breakfast for the birthday celebration, sent by one of the neighbors.

When Willie returns from his run, Mr. Tom has the presents and food spread on the table. Willie cannot believe these are for him. Included in the presents is the clothing that Mr. Tom has had made for the boy, including shorts, a sleeveless sweater, and a hat, all handmade by people in the village.
