Summary

The pursuit of Cacciato continues and twice the men find the remains of his fires. The jungle ends and the squad walks among a field of grasses. The men smell smoke and suddenly Stink Harris fires a shot and kills a water buffalo that is pulling a cart of three refugees. There are two old women and a young woman. The men talk to the young woman, Sarkin Aung Wan, who speaks English. She explains that the family has left its home in Cholon and are headed west. The dead water buffalo was a longtime family pet. The men adjust the cart to be pulled by the remaining water buffalo. The men climb aboard the cart and continue their mission...
