Summary

In Chapter 18, a messenger from Eustace arrives at Rory and Granny’s home. He tells Rory that Eustace wants Rory and Eli to pick up a sugar shipment in Wilkes County. While driving, Rory and Eli talk about Asa, theorizing that Asa may be working with his sheriff brother to consolidate the whiskey trade. They arrive at an airstrip to buy the sugar from an airplane pilot. Other whisky runners are there, including Cooley Muldoon, who challenges Rory to a car race. Cooley bets $100, and Rory accepts the challenge. Rory and Eli buy sugar and load their cars with the sacks. Rory and Eli then race Cooley, who is driving his Hudson Hornet. The town limit is the finish line. Rory takes the lead, but after Cooley hits a doe, Rory stops to inspect the doe. He sees that the doe is mortally wounded...
