Summary

The second section, “Us: April-July 1992,” starts with the chapter “The Devil’s Playground,” which is told from Dex’s perspective.

Dex and Lacey drove three towns over to Dickinson to take mushrooms at a church. After the service, they planned to go to a field and find the meaning of life, but instead they got in a truck with a group of boys, went to a farm, and ended up killing a cow in a pseudo-satanic ritual. Dex blacked out, and when she came to, she was in a barn making out with a boy, and Lacey was with another one. Dex wanted to leave, so Lacey left her boy and they drove off together.
