Summary

The section, Day One, told from the third person point of view from Cameron’s perspective, is narrated in a non-chronological order. Day One is the first day of the search for Lucinda Hayes’ killer and the day that Cameron learns about her death in a school assembly. The news shocks both Cameron and his best friend Ronnie. Cameron throws up. The narrative flashes back to an image of Lucinda on the previous night as she looks out of her bedroom window.

After hearing that Lucinda is dead the students speculate about the cause of her death. Ronnie agrees with the theory that she killed herself and complains because Cameron’s vomit is on his shoes.
