The Campsite

The campsite in the woods is the central setting for the novel's events in the narrative present. Over the course of the archeological retreat, Silvie, Bill, Alison, Professor Slade, Molly, Dan, and Pete spend the majority of their time together gathered around the fire. It is the hub of their interactions and conversational explorations. When all of the characters are proximally located around the fire, the author is able to explore each of their complex relational dynamics. It is often here that Silvie finds herself capable of expressing her true thoughts and feelings, knowing her father will not hurt her in the presence of the group.
