Chapter 15 Summary

Sister Parker leads Patty to the upstairs office and helps her lie down. Her mother can be heard asking Mr. Bergen why he hit Patty. Mr. Bergen calls the sheriff. When he arrives, Mr. Bergen is hostile to Patty and refuses to leave the room while the sheriff questions her. The sheriff is gentle towards Patty and makes Mr. Bergen give the ring back to her. Patty tells the sheriff that an old man gave her the ring after she fed him. She does not recount the part about him being rich. The sheriff is satisfied with her answer, but her father still wants to know why the man gave her the ring.
