Chapter 9 Summary

In town, everyone is talking about Anton's escape. They think he was part of the group of Nazi saboteurs. The FBI comes to the store and questions Patty about the day she talked to Anton in the store. She tells them she only laughed with Anton because he did not know what a pencil sharpener was called. She then forces herself to cry in order to make herself seem innocent. Later, her father says Americans should not even take prisoners, insinuating that they should all be killed.

A female newspaper reporter comes to the store. Patty offers to show her where the camp for German prisoners is located. She tells the reporter, Charlene Madlee, that she would like to be a reporter when she grows up. Charlene then allows Patty to go with her as she questions the prison's warden.
