Chapter 5 Summary
Patty takes the train to see her grandmother in Memphis. Her grandmother takes her out to a fancy lunch in a restaurant at the top of a grand hotel. Grandma tells Patty she is worried about her sisters in Hitler-occupied Luxembourg. She hasn't heard from them in months. After lunch, Grandma takes her shopping for some new clothes. When it is time for Patty to leave, she tells Grandma that the afternoon has been the best time she has had all summer and she wants to come back the following Thursday. Grandma says that she is sorry but next week will not work because she is going on vacation. Patty does not believe Grandma's excuse and reacts callously to the news. After the train pulls out from the station, Patty begins to cry. The next day, she feels guilty for being angry with Grandma and writes her a thank-you note.
