Chapter 18 Summary

Sharp reports that Leroy, the seventeen-year-old in Luke Will's group, gets grazed by a bullet. Leroy gets hysterical, crying and sniveling, and Luke Will and the others tell him to shut up. Henry slaps Leroy, but he just gets louder. Leroy wants to give himself up. Leroy calls out to Mapes and tries to get his help, but Mapes tells him he's out of luck. Luke Will tells Mapes he wants to get Leroy out of there, and Mapes tells him to go ahead. Luke Will says the black people will shoot them. Luke Will tries to claim one of the black people, rather than he, shot Mapes. Leroy starts whining again. Luke beats him up. The others hold Luke Will down so Leroy can crawl away.
