Chapter 17 Summary

Snookum describes the shooting and yelling that suddenly erupts when the sheriff gets shot. He darts out of the kitchen in back and goes under the house. His grandmother is holding onto Toddy and Minnie and yelling for him to get back inside. He sees Mapes trying, unsuccessfully, to get up. He hears Gram Mon yelling for him and the Reverend Jameson praying and everyone else just shooting and yelling. He sees Lou crawling next to the house with a pistol. Lou sees him and tells him to go back to his grandmother. Snookum stays where he is, so Lou tells him to stay down. Lou asks Mapes if he is all right and tells him Griffin resigned. Mapes tries to swear Lou in and tells Lou.....
