Chapter 14 Summary

Rooster picks up the narrative at Marshall again, from the point when Miss Merle leaves with her empty baskets. He reveals that when they go behind the house to the toilet, all the men get shells out of the shoebox that Clatoo hid there. They hear the police radio and watch Mapes have a conversation on it. Mapes tells them to gather around and announces that Fix isn't coming. They don't believe him. He tells them they've been expecting Fix to behave as if it were thirty years ago. He says it's their fault Fix isn't coming, for praying that "Salt and Pepper" would play on the same team and for having their prayers answered. He tells them that they've been fools for wanting Fix to stay the same as thirty years ago.....
